Germany and 6h work day.

Is it true that Germany has 6h work day, instead of like we poor guys in sweden, 8h work day?

Any German dude here who has any comments about it? Does it work good? I've understood that you've got quite much unemployed people living there, does it have anything to do with that?

I've calculated a bit...

official worktimes for me:

6:15 - 8:45
----------
breakfast
----------
9:15 - 11:35
----------
lunch
----------
12:20 - 16:15

equals 8:50 hours without breaks, 10 hours with.

unofficial (real) worktimes:

7:15 - 8:30
-----------
breakfast
-----------
9:15 - 11:00
-----------
lunch
-----------
12:20 - 15:00

equals 5:40 without breaks, 7:45 with.

however, in my real unit there's shiftwork, with 24 hour shifts and 3 free days after each shift. So you got 24 hours worktime per 4 days, which is an average of 6 hours per day. We work on Saturdays, Sundays and national free days too, though.

You see c-frog, you were kind of right, at least for me Mr. GreenMr. GreenMr. Green

Oh, I forgot, those worktimes I mentioned only count for Monday till Thursday. Friday:

official: 6:15 - 11:30 - 4h15min

real: 7:15 - 10:00 - 2h45min

As you see, that drowns the real worktime average per weekday to 5h8min, without breaks.

Well, you've got 35h/week at least? Here we still have 40h/week... (There's some law that says that you can't work more than 40h/week without any day off, so I guess it's the same in your country but with 35h/week ?)

To ensure your job they want to invent the 42h/week system. But you get the same money like for a 35h/week job. So you work more for the same money. It also depends on your position an sales engineer will of course work longer then 8 hrs. A friend of mine works usually a min of 10 hrs Smile

No no, both Germany & France work 8 hours / day.

We frenchies however have 1/2 free day (we work 35 hours / week) thanks to the previous governement. But the actual one wants to cancel this law and get us back to work 39 hours / week (#@Ģ$ them !).

Those guys must for sure be very clever : If there are not enough jobs for everyone to work 35 hours a week, there will probably not be enough jobs for everyone to work 39 hours a week...

But well, I work in Switzerland and in the video business, that implies that the only rule for working times is that there is no rule (this is true all over the world in the video business).

There are however 2 major differences between France and Germany : In France we work until 60, and the governement wants us to work until 65 (same comment as on the 35 hours here) whereas in Germany they work until 63 (If I am not mistaking) but one of their right wing politicians (Angela Merkel) is said that she wants them to work until 74 years old (Work, consume and die could be her motto !). The 2nd difference is that we're much better at demonstrating (We must be the world best demonstrators...the japanese tour operators even include the visit of a demonstration in their Paris tours !)

And yes, unemployment is high in both France and Germany...much higher than in Sweden (it must be around 10% if I'm not mistaking).

Usually a full time job is 38.5h per week, breaks are counted in except for one 30-minutes main break. Usually it's spread 8,5h (8h without the break) at four days and the rest on another day. At least that's what the unions sattled for. Of course, your may sign a different contract, as well. In many cases, this is merely an average over the entire year since many jobs are season depended or the demand is quite unpredictable.
