 |
For a review that I have to write about the debut album from Tree Wave (www.treewave.com), I would like to get in touch with someone who has a functional Commodore 64. The seventh track of their CD namely is a C-64 datatrack, and I would like to know what it exactly is
The deal is that I send you the MP3 (if that suffices, but I think it does), which you should record on tape, and load into your Commodore. In return, you get my unending respect (_0_) and a custom Forum subname (if approved by Yannick, that is ).
Kind regards,
Inge |

There is a converter.

Q: No, I am just a plain PC user and I have got a soundcard. Can I do something?
A: Yes. Record the tape to a VOC file and use 64VOCTAP by Tomaz Kac. Or record the tape to a WAV file and use Tape 64 by Andreas Matthies.

Except that the soundcard is a CD-ripper in this case. I never tried, though. |

I've tried both, but they both only work in either native DOS or 'real' win95/98/me mode. I couldn't run them in compatibilitymode in XP atleast.
I'm now going to try Audiotap (http://wav-prg.sourceforge.net/index.html), which atleast runs in native WinXP mode Thanks for this link!

If the format of the track is "SID" there is a Winamp plugin available for this format. |

I got a .tap file now, but I can't find an intuitive Commodore 64 emulator (so one without this irritating blue commandline interface).
If anyone has a nice Windows-based emulator that reads .tap files (or any other format that can be derived from a .wav file), then I'll be the happiest person around.

Heiko: thanks for your help here. I did install that program, and loaded the file via F9. Sadly, it didn't work. Either the program did not load, or the PC keyboard cannot properly emulate a Commodore 64 keyboard.
Any further help, or someone willing to test this if I send this person the .tap file?

Well, I guess you can send the file to me as well, but it will need to be as close as possible to what was on the Treewave CD, i.e. data integrity. If no progress on anyone's part, then I will then set up my C64 (well, I actually have 3 working units) and see what I can obtain from the TD or FDD. |

If you tell us the error message or any other behavior, we might know what's going wrong. |

This topic has puzzled me a bit, but I think I understand it now it now.
Am I right to assume that the file that you originally got was NOT and actual C64 sound file - but rather the sound of the datafile being played on a casseteplayer (does it sounds a bit like a modem connecting).
So - in order to hear the SOUNDFILE (that it claims to be) one would have to play&record the Mp3 file to a cassete.(C64 used casettes as datamedia) and load it into memory and hopefully find it to be a player and a piece of music?? |

Yeah, that's what we all surmised. The question though is, does it say on that CD that this is indeed a datasette file? You all have to also realize that the cassette drive for C64's are different from normal audio/music tape cassette players. That is, it only senses pulse/square wave signals at a certain voltage level, thus the file has to be in that format. Not only that, but the file is duplicated twice (2nd time is for Verify). Again, I won't set up my C64, unless someone asks me to try this. |

Here's the text from the inlay of the CD:
"to load the synth program on your commodore 64:
1) dub the 7th track to cassette starting just after 4 minutes into the track (where that piercing tone starts)
2) put the tape in your c64 tape drive
3) start the c64 and type load and hit return
4) wait..."found"...wait more..."ready"
5) type run and hit return
Instructions:
top keys = notes
bottom keys = sounds
function keys = portamento
c=key = fifths
shift = off
paddle controller in port 2 = filter cutoff"
The .tap file can be found at

The TAP is failing recognition. Header, checksums and read tests are ok though. I checked the Treewave site. Is this from the Cabana CD? How did you obtain the TAP from the CD? Was it already in ASCII text format (with .tap extension)?? You might want to contact Treewave and see if they can give you a proper file... should be ok, just let them know you're reviewing their CD. |
