Looking for a small mixer

I'm going to use my PC to record songs with my band this summer, and so I'll need a small mixer, with about 12-16 channels. We need to record singing, guitar, bass and drums.
I was going to just rent/borrow a mixer along with the necessary microphones, but I'd like to buy a mixer if I can get a good one for under 500 euro.
I've never bought a mixer before, so I'm not exactly sure what to get: there seems to be a bewildering array of mixers out there. I'm just looking for three-band EQ and slidey-faders; I'm not too pushed about phantom power but it'd be nice to have the option, and the effects I want to use are all on the computer already.
Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
Dave

I myself use a simple phonic 4-channel mixer, it cost me around 65 euro's, I know they have mixer with more channels all with relatively low prices. Check them out!

behringer have nice mixers: good value for money. But you might want to check something from mackie as that's a bit more quality.

my humble opinion/top:

in the budget(analog)range:
1. spirit mixers
very nice EQ, nice preamps.
2. mackie
clean EQ, decent preamps
3. phonic
4. behringer
3 and 4 are mostly the same...

if you want a very good sound and buy your mixer 2nd hand: I would advise you to go for a Tascam M1600 16channel(or24 Very Happy)
very very nice EQ, very warm!

Thanks everyone for the advice. Those Soundcraft mixers are very nice but they're a little too expensive - is there much difference in quality from a Mackie?
The one I was looking at had "S/PDIF out" but I still don't know exactly what that is...
The Mackie 1402 VLZ is what I'm considering at the moment; has anyone had experience with one of those?
Dave.

I'm not sure about what s/pdif is for a mixer, but normally this implies a digital output (optical or coax), which is nice for exporting your sound to another device with a digital input with very low signal to noise levels.

Ofcourse, Wikipedia knows it all:

I recorded my band with my PC a couple of years ago, using a Behringer MX2004A that I bought new for around €200. It has decent pre-amps, three band EQ, slidey faders, phantom power and did the work. The "alt" bus proved practical to computer recording.

Hi, it doesnt really belong to this topic but did you know that Behringer studied at my university of applied sciences in Duesseldorf? Smile An ex professor told me that.
