so you would say that a Athlon64 3000+ 1.8GHz 512KB So939 (venice) is way faster then a AMD Sempron 3100 1.8GHz So754? Also, will all my software still work with a 64 bit cpu? It doesn't cause incompatibilty problems or whatever?

Walter, really close to ordering now

The Athlon64 is faster than the sempron, because a sempron is sort of a "tuned down" version much like the duron is to the athlon and the celeron is to the regular pentiums.

My system runs on an athlon64 for roughly half a year now and I haven't encountered any problems with it.

See Blaster's answer. The Venice has more L2 cache, and some improvements in the instructions it supports. Furthermore, going socket 393 (nforce 4, if possible) allows a dual core upgrade in the future, which is quite a nice prospect.

Ok thnx, I think I'm done with the processor subject now. Altough I may also look at intel for a bit, I heard that their better with audio or something (probably will go for AMD though, prices...). Still haven't ordered btw, went to a couple of shops in the city to ask if they can order the silentium case for me. I really want that. I'm getting e-mails about it tomorrow. If they can't, I'll probably order on the web. I wish I wasn't this critical.

Buying computers sucks!

Intel Pentium was better for DAW's, but currently Opteron's are pwn'ing Xeon's big time. As was already said: AMD gives the most cycles per buck, and the current 64/X2 line of processors is just amazingly powerful and fast. There really is no reason to go with a P4, especially since the current Prescott core is extremely warm (the boxed cooler is like a raving nightmare for all our customers), and is outperformed by the 64 bit AMD cpu's.

I totally agree with you Walter. Buying computers does suck.

God knows that I've been bitching about replacing my old p.o.s. of a computer since probably the dark ages. Just ask Inge about that one and he'll tell you I've been whining like a bitch about what to get.

Needles to say I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. Trying to get the most bang for the cheapest buck.

i've got an:

pentium4 3.2 / 1mb cache
asus p4c800 deluxe
60gb ide hdd
2 * 80 sata hdd's (all maxtor)
ati radeon 9800 se+tv (is softmoddable to a 9800pro)
rme hdsp9652
1gb mem
nec 1100a dvd burner (+ only)
19" iiyamaa vision master 542
aopen case and xpower power supply (350watts/very quiet)
zalman cpu cooler (alcu7000) and zm80 for videocard (passive)

hmm that's about it. nice system.
i am not a real amd fan, i like them for gaming.
but for pro audio... (i know that most issues are solved, but working on very low audio latencies is not a real plus with amd if ya ask me)
dunnow about the new x2's etc.

Sweet! Nice mainboard & cooler. I never heard of v-data ram. I assume it's a 2x512 mb kit? And what kind of monitor are you going to use?

I don't think so, should it be?

Maybe someday I will have money for a TFT monitor, for now I'll use my old 19" (don't know the brand)

Yup! The primary advantage of 939 over 754 (concerning technical possibilities) is that the 939 has a memory controller to allow dual channel communication with the memory (the extra pins of the 939 are only used for that purpose!). Dual channel is only possible with two (identical) memory modules. If you ordered 1x1gb, then change it into 2x512. The price difference is almost minimal, and it can give small increases in performance (0 to 10%, but only in processes that demand high data flow between memory and processor, such as multitrack editing).

Nevertheless, the 939 socket architecture also allows beter scaling (more processors will be supported, such as X2 and the Venice), so it's always wise to go for this socket. Furthermore, the dual channel advantage isn't *that* big. Here's some stuff to think about:

How important is "L2 Cache"?
I´ve seen intel pentium 4 processors with 1 MB L2 Cache and with 2 MB L2 Cache. The 2 MB Cache is more expensive, but what exactly is the difference compared to each other?

Edit:
Example from a website:

Art. nr. Onderdeel Meerprijs

68275 Intel Pentium 4 530 (3 GHz) processo - (standaard) - (geselecteerd) € 0,00
68283 Intel Pentium 4 540 (3,2 GHz) proces € 45,00
71212 Intel Pentium 4 550 (3,4 GHz) proces € 94,00
76013 Intel Pentium 4 560 (3,6 GHz) proces € 284,00
85180 Intel Pentium 4 630 (3 GHz) processo € 55,00
85198 Intel Pentium 4 640 (3,2 GHz) proces € 114,00
85201 Intel Pentium 4 650 (3,4 GHz) proces € 264,00
85219 Intel Pentium 4 660 (3,6 GHz) proces € 474,00

Which one would you choose, the Pentium 4 540 (3,2 GHz) or the Pentium 4 630 (3 GHz) and why? They are both about the same price, the 540 has more clockcycles, but the 630 has 2MB of L2 cache.
