You can listen to an excerpt here.
Besides her need of singing lessons, is her vocal too in the front ? Too in the back ? Just allright ?
|
First I'd use a de-esser on her voice or whatever it is that causes those ear-tearing 10kHz sounds. Then I'd evaluate again...
As for the originally posted track. Like many have said, the vocals are too far in the back and the drums are a bit boring (but I'd accept that if the vocals/mixing was better). With some work you could lift this one up a couple of notches though, even if it means having a sporty spice sound all over again |

I now cleared the 10kHz area and re-posted the file at the very same address. Is this 10kHz problem solved now ?
If not, what de-essing plugin would do it right ? |

Hey
I think the song is great, TNK!
Believe also the high SSH! frequences are surpressed in the preview I listened to, meaning your de-ess is working.
Just a fast footnote:
The girl that sings has a very dark female voice, and it would be nice to see the result of combine it with another soprano female voice, singing on higher pitch in the chorus parts.
I also think you should try some warm EQ on the lower frequences in her voice, and try to see if it gives a softer and better end result. I mean, the reverb effects just plays along on those deep frequences making it sound slightly too "roomish".
If it isn't that causing it, then it must be the reverb plugin I'm not that fond of.
But hey! I feel I am making comments like I was sitting behind a million dollar studio of equip myself with girls singing like that lined up in queue outside to demoing their stuff - which ofcourse I don't. Neither am I that experienced of mixing, so I might be very wrong in what I say here.
When that said, my comments here is just cosmetics and an effort trying to find someway to help lifting this song a little bit higher. This girl definitely has a nice voice to work with in a lot of different aspects. |

OK. Let's see what sunbuster thinks about it. As he was the 1st person to point that out and as I know that he's very good in everything that deals with sound engeenering, I'ld like his opinion on this very point.

That's exactly how the chorus of this song will work when it will be finished. For the moment being, the demo features a virtual higher pitch part based on the main vocal + some pitchshifting, because the 2nd vocalist did not record her part yet.

Indeed it slightly is (especially in the "woh oh oh oh" parts), mainly to give some depth to the sound of the voice as long as the 2nd vocalist isn't there.

I personally think her performance is a bit flat, as this girl lacks a lot of self confidence. She always begins her phonecalls with "Err... excuse me mister (yes, she calls me mister), I'm ... err... I'm sorry to disturb you...". The same goes for when she's on stage, she almost apologizes to the audiance for being alive. I don't know what made her feel so little confident with herself, but I'm already working on a song about ... a girl who's not self confident
I think that once we'll have solved her self confidence problems her singing teacher (now she got her 1st lesson) is aware of, she might improve her performances quite fast.
Besides this, I think she has it all to make it in the music business, don't you think ? |

Well, she do have a Mic stuck up in her face on that pic making it harder to judge, but I guess she will have to do...
Anyway, you got FAR better material to work with than I...
I reposted the original song now on ftp://ftp.harestad.info/music/let_it_go.mp3 , and you can clearly see what different it makes when you work with "first record try" and "I dont care, I got the flu and my voice just basicly sucks" attitude.
Again, the preview is just what it is.. a working preview. I've shapened up quite a bit on the first part with EQ/Compressors, now working on the second part. Ofcourse, resampling has to be done on ALL vocals - but that is for the later... There is even a sharp background tv-noise on the later vocals, as I was too tired to search for my Y-cables connecting the mixer to the compressor, so basicly I just sang through a Boss ME30 guitar effectbox with bypass.
My main concern was however to try to shift the direction of the song away from the sporty spice stamp into something unique me. However, I am almost sure the "roughly rock" endpart -as it is now- will not work for this tune in the long run. I am already working with a different idea and redoing it into something more "popish". Well, as I said.. It is a working project atm. and the outcome is still not yet decided. Feel free to comment widely on this, however, as it is a big concern right now.
Edit: Oh, btw.. I had to clean the Internet Explorer cache to get the right version in media player when clicking the link above. The song should now be about 48sec long.

There's still something that bothers me in the 10-12kHz area... Could there be some other instrument that clashes with her voice? Because sometimes it sounds just fine, sometimes again she's cutting my ears (@9 sec about for instance).
Perhaps try with an EQ that is capable of high Q-values (the Waves Paragraphic EQ's for instance) to find the frequency that causes these high sounds, then use either the EQ directly or a DeEsser (Waves DeEsser for instance) at that frequency. If you want you could send me/post a snippet of just her singing (with FX you used) and I could try to find the frequency also |
