Horrible Noise on Startup

Every once in a while when I load a module, this horrid grinding noise will come out of the speakers at full volume, which scares the living hell out of me. This happens even though I've set the tracks not to play when they're loaded. It also slows down the computer a great deal, and the screeching will continue until the computer resumes its normal speed. The processor light doesn't come on when the computer is slowed. After the computer goes back to normal and I've pressed the stop button 50 times in agony, I have to load the module again or else it plays the screeching/grinding whenever I press the play button. It shakes me a good deal, especially when I'm playing around with some spooky synths late at night. Has anyone else had this problem, or know of some possible causes/remedies?

Thankee,
Jimm

*Edit* I'm not sure if this is the same problem MagnarTBL has a few posts down... if I reload the module everything's fine afterwards...

My version of Windows is XP 2002, service pack 2, and I believe my sound card is the Realtek AC97 Audio.
