Hey all,
For a school project in wich I needed to do some midi-editing I started using cubase, and after I was finished I tried madtracker in rewire mode, now that gave a CPU overload so i'll still need to figure out how to get that to work, but it got me thinking of a new way to compose music, for myself.
I think i'm gonna use cubase for all kinds of melodic stuff, like pads or strange lead sounds using vsti's and use madtracker as an big big sampler/sequencer for drums, arps and stuff like that. in rewire I can choose to let madtracker flow back into cubase per channel or just the master so in mixing terms I'll be alright.
This all because I think i compose to much in an lets say 128 lines kind of way, to translate this to musical terms, an 8 bar kind of way.
This makes all my music pretty boxed up if you know what I mean, wich is good for dance music, but I sometimes feel like making a nice pad sequence that is 7 bars long or 9 and then loop it so that the track gets all wierd and stuff, but I never do it because its just loads of work to do within a tracker. but in cubase this is just easy copy paste stuff.
so ehm, what do you think about this and do you use something next to madtracker to overcome the downsides of trackers/madtracker?

I agree - the tracker interface does impose on how the music is made. I am not that familiar with Cubase - but the way you set up the workflow sounds interesting.
Sometimes I think that Madtracker lacks the ability to show me the "big picture" of a song. - Impulse tracker had an superior zooming ability as far as I remember. It was easier to jump back an forth between patterns - which I guess is part of the problem you are describing. |

I myself use Fl Studio to create all my leads and riffs. I find it easy to see notes in a "piono roll" than it is currently in madtracker. Heard there might be sumthing like this in MT3. Or i can only hope. |

for all my mt2 projects I use rewire with SX. the advantages are many, I too use mt2 mainly as a "drum machine" or a tool to do more technical stuff. rewire isn't always so handy and fast but with this solution I can do pretty much everything I want to. so untill mt3 this is the way I use mt2. |

Ey cool, that's just the idea I had for mt!
did you have any CPU overloads in SX and stuff with rewire? |

not really, as long as I use the vst's and stuff in sx and work with samples in madtracker the cpu is quite friendly. there are still some small issues with rewire tho but it might be my sx that screws with me. it has a tendensy to record my midi feed more and more off the longer I have the project open. I've heard this is a cubase problem but I thought they would fix this in later versions. |

Well, personnally, it's not the way I compose. I know, I have often been told my composition style - and the way I build stuff anyway, this goes for stage plays & screenplays too - were too clear and more suitable to pop/dance stuff than more experimental stuff. This led the other people in the local music scene to nick name me "The mathematician" (BTW, the cubic root of seven will rule the world ! ... just some Lolliesque nonsense )
But indeed, I use several programms around MT to make my music, mainly Adobe Audition for mixing purposes (altough a lot can be done in MT) and to record / edit the vocals. |

Sweet, I'm a word now. XD
Digital studio...
Eeh, the only programs I use alongside MadTracker are Goldwave, and a demo version of Cool Edit from 1996. |

Cool, I thought I was the only one still using that!!
When I was 12 i made my first "remix" in cool edit 96... i chopped up the James Bond theme music, added bits of prodigy songs and made my sister sing over it. it was like totally awesome dude
So I have a kind of sentimental attachment to it, but I must say it's a pretty nifty editor either way. |
