What is Starforce?

Starforce is a software copy protection tool installed by PC game publishers, which is designed to prevent the casual copying of retail CDROM applications. It installs as a hidden device driver, without the end-user's knowledge or consent.

...
Users report that the software gobbles up computing cycles, slows CD drive read-times, creates CD-R read errors even after removal, and is responsible for a number of device conflicts - particularly with external USB drives. Users who have tried to remove the product manually have often damaged their systems to the point of needing a fresh OS install.

I just found this shit on my system. You can find out how to detect it at the site: http://www.glop.org/starforce/#detect

They had a 'contest' some time ago to proove that their software does not inflict damage on systems. To proove this, they asked people to send in a faulty dvd/cd-drive due to the starforce-software. Nice, but two problems
1: you had to travel to Russia to hand in the drive (at own expenses, if I'm not mistaken)
2: you had to proove that it was a 100% sure that Starforce was the cause of the malfunctioning drive (which is impossible).

They're a bit of an odd company indeed, but so are most implementations of DRM and whatnotmore. Take for instance the nonsense-software needed to copy music to Apple and Sony-mp3 players or SonyEricsson Walkman-phones.

Read how starforce pressures publishers who don't include DRM schemes in their software (but still manage to be #1 in sales) :

Sony's DRM is perfect : Now that no one will buy their cr*p anymore, who will pirate their stuff ?

No sale -> No piracy !

But forget about Sony & Starforce, the best protected CDs are... the blank ones ! Ever managed to rip something out of a blank CD ?

I know you can get around some copy protection cds just by holding down SHIFT when putting the cd in the drive for the first time. Not sure if it works on this though. Good hint if you need to back up audio CDs with copy protection.

Pushing shift just blocks the autorun process when inserting a CD. Just disable the autorun function of your windows and you don't need to push SHIFT anymore.

BTW, under the new DADSVI law that's gonna be voted in France, if I followed the debates correctly, I would risk a fine of 300.000 euros & 3 years in jail if I had posted this after the final vote (March 21st, 2006...)
