Random Musical Musings

I've been thinking a lot lately about a certain kind of... how shall we say... morality, in music. Things like using drumloops, or arps to make up your song, doing things to try to save a bit of work for yourself, i.e. cheating. I'm just wondering, you know... what are your thoughts on this?

I'll give you a bit of a scale to work with, a la left-right wing:

Far left: Here we have the thought that even sequencers themselves are cheating, and residents of the Far Left prefer to use normal instruments whenever possible.

Middle left: Here are the people who think of arps and drumloops are cheating, as well as a lot other things: VST versions of real instruments, or things that make dull tasks faster.

Center: In the center are people who are pretty much allright with most work-saving devices; they use drumloops if the situation warrants it, or arps when they sound good, and if something saves work, it's fine by them.

Middle Right: People in the middle right will use drumloops fairly often, and arps will occasionally make up a portion of their song's melody. Work-saving effects and VSTs are often used.

Far right: On the far right, people will use drumloops in large quantities to make up much or all of their percussion, arps will occur nearly everywhere you look, and as often as possible, work-saving methods are employed.

That's about it. I know it's slightly biased, but it's the best I could do without *cough* spending too much work on it.

I'll be interested to hear your responses Very Happy

hmm, I think I end up somewhere between center and middle left. I don't mind people using drumloops and such, but I do think it's sort of cheating. I prefer to use real instruments whenever possible, but not because they're harder to use, but because they usually sound better than their synthetic counterparts (depends on the genre of course, a techno track should probably not be using a concert piano).

Using drumloops is okay by me if you use them as a base and then modify them to create your own sound. Simply picking a drumloop from a library and sticking it into the song is not cool imo. Drumloops in the end are relatively easy to do, yet drums are the part where many mediocre-could-be-great tracks fail imo. Why? My guess is because they use a drumloop and then don't bother changing it around enough to create variations other than the basic hihat-on hihat-off. You can use drumloops, but you should know how they are built first.

To put it short, use aids that speed up your work process as much as you like, but you should know the basics first. There is no shortcut to making great music Wink
