Mac vs PC: the neverending story

Apple Admits MacBook Slip Up

In a nutshell: a number of Apple Macbook's got extraordinary warm, and now it turns out to be that there was a manufacturing mistake made by Apple. No big deal, since these things happen. What does matter is the discussion below the article about the way Apple deals with their customers, their own mistakes, and the context of advantage that they curently have with respect to Microsoft/Dell. Some not-even-that-stupid pc and apple users voice their complaints about apples and pc's, and it's definately worth reading if you're - like me - doubtful concerning which way to go.

I personally was considering buying an MacBook Pro once Intel's newest cpu-line, the Core 2 Duo, would be shipping inside these notebooks. I enjoyed the idea of using BootCamp to use both OS X as Vista as XP. But what's the use? Their pricing is quite high, their service is not always great, their choice of hardware is limited and sometimes outdated (the gpu inside the macbook is so wack), and the number of problems (especially with ibook mainboards) is tremendous. Nevertheless, using multiple operating systems, the great design and the vibe of innovation still is attractive.

The question then becomes for all pc-users: why should you or I buy an Apple? All arguments, pro and contra, are more than welcome!

I guess many Mac-owners like the design.

I can understand that you are excited about a dual OS system - but for me a system with vista/linux would be more fruitful, mainly because I believe that there is a greater chance that future employers would have a linux based OS than an osx.

But it seems to me that you really would like a Mac but cant find the "right" reasons... so buy it because you want to.Wink

I'm considering a MacBook pro because I need a laptop and I need a system where I can test websites and Java programs etc. in a Mac enviroment. Many of my friends hav Macs and they like them very much (one of them is a former die hard PC enthusiast), so I'm thinking it can't be all that bad. Being involved in the media industry a lot of people preffer a Mac over a PC, so by onwing one myself it would make a lot of things easier. Being able to boot XP or similar is a bonus that also weighs into my decision. Having something with the power of a desktop system on the go is another pro for me (which could be achieved with a PC laptop also of course).

Having said that, a lot of it simply is about owning a cool (or not so cool) piece of hardware Wink

ps. you can put Linux on your Mac also, don't know if you can make it dual-bootable though (haven't looked into that).

ps2. One of my friends has a MacBook Pro he bought a couple of weeks ago. I'll ask him if he's noticed any heat issues.

I have a powerbook, and I realy enjoy osx, the way it works and stuff. But for obvious reasons I need windows. Now for the future...

I'm still doubtfull, I realy want to see what the apple guys are going to do with the new pro desktop line, probably intels conroe processors, so that's nice. And since I think that apple hardware is always top notch ( the video card in the macbook is wack indeed, but the macbook pro is a great gaming laptop i've heard ), live I use the internal soundcard from the powerbook, and it's just SO cristal clear, and no ground noises like on pc laptops.

But, pc's are easyer to upgrade, although in a desktop mac, a HD will be as easy to replace as a PC...

So, i'll go for the looks then...

PC: P4 HT 3ghz, 1gb ram, 500GB+ Storage, plextor DVD-rw, M-audo Audiophile 2496
Laptop: Apple Powerbook G4 15inch

I was also very tempted to get a new Apple because it can run windows when needed and I like OSX and the pro software that is available for macs. It also somes with very charming userfriendly software.

Buying it now is just a waste of money for me as there are windows equivalents for everything I do with a computer.

If I bought a new computer today it'd be a mac.
I've always been a mac enthusiast, mainly thanks to my mother ;P

The OS is perfect, the GUI is wodnerful! Very Happy
Only downside I see is the price.

Not quite true - try to get a videochat going with a none mac user for instance. Software like skype and MSN does not support video conference on OSX. Bet there are tons of instances where software development are not up to speed compared to WIN based systems.

Like, try to find a free converter to convert your movies do mpeg4. you cant, you will have to BUY a crappy encoder, which is dead slow.

Umm...madtracker can be done on a mac? Only because new macs can run windows. In which case you might as well save some money and get a pc.
New Macs run an emulator for OSX, making them 4 times slower than they could have been. They are the same speed as my friends mac laptop who bought his computer 3 years ago.

I remember playing Myst, F/A-18 Hornet and Dark Forces on my old hunka-junk. I still have it upstairs.

In a completely unrelated topic, does anyone want to buy a good ol' Macintosh, with 8 megs of RAM and a 300 MB hard drive?? Laughing
