Heh, so I've been listening to techno for about the last 10 years and I've always thought it would be a neat thing to make my own techno'ish song(s). So I download the Free Madtracker trial thing on the website (the one without mt2 to mp3 conversion, of course) and I find I like toying around with the tracker. In case I didn't state it clearly enough, this is my first one; though really I can tell it's very professional, and easy to get the hang of. Heh, at least the basics are easy enough to understand that I can't blame the software for anything I make that I don't like!
Anyways, my first "song" I deleted because all in all: it sucked. Badly. Horribly. As in someone should bring out the newb stick and smack me around a couple times with it.
It was in fact so bad that I lost the motivation to fix it, even though I realised what was wrong with it. (In the case that you're interested, I learned the hard way that though patterns may sound good individually, they don't always mesh well. Also it was too monotonous and needed some more stuff to go with it to take away the monotony, though more stuff + not harmoneous = Ungood ) So I deleted everything (including the software, whoops) and am at this point right now where I ask you: Do I try again?
I'm very analytical, so my music making would be more 'trial and error' than me just 'feeling it.' However I doubt I'd ever release anything until I was sure it was ready and well done. Also if I do download it again, I'm going to register it so I can both support you guys for making such a great product and convert my songs to mp3. (Thank goodness I couldn't convert my last one to mp3 XP Now it's at least gone for good.)
But I digress, the decision's yours.
Though I do have one last question: Do you regret making music? It's a weird question, I know, but hear me out. I've often wondered if I ever became an artist, if I wouldn't be able to see the forest for the trees. I'm afraid that if I become a painter, I'll only see paintings as a series of brushstrokes, and comparing the techniques of that artist to those of my own. Someone pointed it out best to me when they said they had a famous actor for an uncle or something. The uncle went to his sister's funeral and though he was sad, he was more intrigued by the crying/reactions other people were giving that he took notes at the funeral, so he could become a better actor. Both a blessing and a curse, I suppose; is that the case with you or am I jumping the gun a bit?
Heh, sorry to make you read all this text, putting up an innocent title such as "Howdy, all" but I really have to know. The prospect is so grand, since I love music and all, but I'm scared I'll either grow bored of it or force myself to stop because my songs aren't perfect (oh, and yes I am a perfectionist, lest I forget).
Oh, and not that it matters, but I'm from the US.
~Winnar
Edit - Or perhaps I should try a different tracker? Because if MT is past its peak and is on its way to obscurity, I'd rather not join in. Heheh, your opinion(s) are the only ones I have to go on so please try not to make them too biased. (From what I gather though, it seems like it's still going full steam. ) |

Howdy ho, nice post btw.
Well... Your first song.. Unless you spent like 1 year making that piece it's very unlikely it would rock the shit outta you. In fact it's quite normal. I would suggest you try making a second piece. Yeah it probably sucks too. And the one after that.
Well... In my case it goes so that everyone else makes better music than I do. I don't if that's comparable. Maybe not. But I have liked all of my pieces at least a short moment. Hmm, but no. I think it's okay and may prove even quite fruitful to compare techniques of yours to those of others. Nothing wrong with that really. But I guess I know what you mean, and I think it's different for everyone. You should just try out IF it will be like that. Then think about what to do, whether or not your fears come reality.
I dont't think you will grow bored, though... There's always something to make sound a little better. Though the idea of a "perfect" song is so obscure you would be a dumm-ass to think that way. No offence mate
Hmm, I don't know about MadTracker... The community and the users are still going fine. And I guess the tracker itself is too, but may indeed take some time. Well I'm not saying if you should or shouldn't use MT. There are nice alternatives, though, no one can deny that. Renoise, Psycle, ModPlug Tracker, Skale, Buzz etc... I suggest you find what's yours. |

Heh, I suppose it is foolish to try to achieve perfection in music, but ah well, I can't help it For now I think I'll get rid of my first song (if I can figure out how >_>; and try again. And again, if necesary.
Oh, and I suppose bored isn't the right word for it. I tend to do things in excess; whether it be video games, TV (and now YouTube <3), etc., I tend to do it so much that by the time I'm done with it the thing has become borderline tedious :O
Not that it matters though, I guess it happens to everyone, it just seems to happen a little faster with me than the average Joe >.>
I'll go to making my second song now, if it's any good (at all) I'll let you guys critique it and help me to become a better music-man Just from my first failure I've learned a lot of key things about music in general, so who knows? Maybe I'll learn even more this time

Me too. Sounds like you are perfect for tracking. You will need to spend A LOT of time to get good with Madtracker or any other music software, but it'll be worth it and will help your brain grow stronger than TV etc can. After 16 years of tracking, my songs are still rubbish, but I still enjoy tracking. |

One good tip that I've found usefull: Let your track rest for about a week after you think it's finished (by rest I mean you don't look at it, you don't listen to it, nothing). If after one week you still think it's good overall, then post it for feedback. Usually, if you can still listen to your track after a week of hibernating it, without falling through the floor or killing your computer, others will find it good enough to say something else than "this sux, change your career plans...". |

Movaj - Y entiendo una pocamente espaņol. Si quieres yo probablamente leerlo (con algun tiempo XD) pero no tengo una preference Jej, puedo translate si quieres muy mucho, pero necesito una mez para completar
Sorry, I forgot the words for preference (preferencia?) and translate (translatar?)
And if I'm wrong and Spanish isn't your first language, someone slap me now
Anyway, thanks for all the input, I haven't had any time in the last two weeks to look at my computer, but starting Wednesday or Thursday I'll try again ^^ (Probably with MT, though my cousin's been hounding me to get Renoise Eh, I'll try Renoise on my third try, it's not fair to leave you guys with my first attempt only! )
I'll try to be more determined in the future! ^^"

Never delete your songs or sketchs. After couple of years or decades (!) you may find something inspiring of them (ideas that you couldnīt express at that time), or at least realize what you have learnt and what you havent learnt yet.
...or it may turn out that those songs are still much better than later ones. Then you just have to try to publish them and if someone call them crap, then he/she just donīt understand that whole new musical genre they represent. Make up a good genre name, use words like experimental, minimalistic, proegressive, naivism, primitive, intelligent, trippy or lo-fi depending on actual content of that shit youīre selling. Or sell them to the military to use them as a sound weapon or in examinations of terrorists.

Its hard to be a perfectionist without the musical talents. I know it from my own experience. But, I guess thereīs no such a thing as īmusical talentsī. You just need to practise - a lot. If you have no tools to express yourself, how it could happen just by īfeeling it.ī? Second, you have to really enjoy, what you are doing.
I dont really know. All that I know is that my songs still sucks after five years of practising. So, forget all the things I just said. |

No its quite the oposite, the more you learn about music the more you will start to appreciate it. Yes you might find that you grow tired of some music because you understand how it is built but if that happens you will in turn start to like new genres because you understand them better.
The time you spend doing music is something you will never regret. I can regret spending my time playing games, looking at bad movies etc but I have never regreted that I spent time trying to make music.
It will keep your brain healthy and it is good for you imagination and a hell of a lot of fun.
My suggestion is that you also try out Renoise and Energy XT or FL Studio.
I have a registerd copy of all programs including madtracker and I spend most time with Renoise.
There are some video tutorials and a great renoise wiki.
Though Renoise and madtracker are so similar that it should not be a problem learning the other once you learned one.
But that may change now that Energy XT will release version 2.
The good thing about trackers is that they let you use your computer keyboard in a easy way to make music.
But today many vst instruments are velocity (pressure) sensitive and it do become even more fun if you get a midikeyboard.
I would also suggest that you check out different vstis at site like kvr.
Oh and if you find that any of those programs are nice do register them to support their development.
Good luck! |

Heh, rest assured I was unable to delete my first song. It seems no matter how hard I tried there was always another version of it I hadn't found. I'll take it as a sign and maybe later (when I don't suck at it) I'll take another look at it.
Thanks for all the support so far, I haven't had any time at all (in fact I'm using my 'break' from my homework to type this post) to do more than tinker with the instruments I've found; maybe this weekend...
I've debated posting the tune, but I would rather finish it before I upload it onto here. And yes, my first song has been labeled incomplete: it has too much and not enough; I don't know what to do with it yet.
Oh, and thanks for the advice on one of my biggest fears of getting into music (or art in general). I suppose I shouldn't compare other things I do in excess to music, because in none of those other things does something truly productive or creative come out of it. (at least, the potential isn't there in the other ones )
