It has been more than a year since I actually bought an album. I can tell what my latest and most beloved digitally-transported ones are:
-finger eleven: greyest of blue skies (go away, Linkin Park! You have been crushed!)
-hybrid: morning sci-fi (the dawn of a new electronical era)
-London Elektricity: Billion Dollar Gravy (we like drum 'n bass, yes Master, we like it!)
-Muse: Absolution (again, a successor that crushes the previous album)
-Mogwai: Happy songs for happy people (the earth shall die. And I shall enjoy it. Die. Be gloomy. Go burn candles).

hmmm...
getting to the question "is music getting better or worse?", well i think it just depends on what genre you're looking for..
for example,
hip hop is by far getting worse than ever, with new talent-less artists popping up all the time, and not enough true underground support.. its just become way too commercial for the music and lyrics to be worth anything in reality- all it is now: money! even ethnic hip hop like stuff coming from poland, france, germany etc, you think its underground? but what do you think they're making it for??
house music is slowly making a comeback after the huge mid-1990's sensation towards it and some years back a bit of a downfall; and the underworld of house has grown immensely since then although many new names that we see on vinyls are just old artists renamed.. but i think its got better, nevertheless..
dunno much about trance, except that new commercial eurocrap trancy stuff is the pain to my ears, and what we need is more tunes like the oldschool ferry corsten style!
my latest purchase was Rootdown 99 compiled by Rainer Truby - selection of nu-jazz and jazzy house music..
hmm.. my 5 cents.. (we dont have any less in australia!)

Latest would be the ones I got in Germany last weekend:
Thievery Corporation - The richest man in Babylon
Timo Maas - Music from the Maases 2
Underworld - A hundred days off
Paul van Dyk - Politics of dancing (finally got around to actually bying the album )
About if music is getting worse, like mikx said, it depends on what you're looking at. Trance for one (which I have most experience of) is definetly getting worse. Or maybe not worse, but there's so much more cheese coming out these days it's hard to find the good stuff. On one hand that's good though, since that means that when you finally find something good, it's that much better because some serious efforts have gone into finding it. But sometimes the amount of shit simply makes me skip the whole search.
edit: have to agree with mikx on the hiphop aspect also. Earlier on the hiphop somehow seemed happier. These days I find that most hiphop is about someone taking down the homeboy, killin ya neighbour cause he pissed in your garden when drunk etc. And let's not even get started on the music videos these days... |

God, if only I could remember what the last Album was that I bought...
Um, "something and something" by "the somethings" or something like that...
I think that it's a two way answer to your question.
Yes, music is getting better.
No, music is getting repetitive.
Sure, some of the stuff getting made these days is original, but most of it's just revamped versions of songs from, like, inbetween the 50s and the 80s!
That's not to say that music these days is crap. There's a lot of great songs out there! I just think that the rest of the "commercial artists" should stop grabbing pre-dated tunes and come up with something they can call their own. |

Hmm, I can agree that this is the case in maybe United States but at least here in Sweden I think it's the other way around. The lousy crappy commercial hiphop wave is finally over and what's left is the older underground hiphop that still is all ok in my opinion. They have that happy attitude which makes it fun to listen to their music... don't feel like killing the next door neighbour |

Oh well. Latest CD I bought was Him's latest album but I didn't buy it for myself. I don't really buy CDs, I think latest I've bought for myself was Deftones - White Pony when it came out and that's quite a while ago I think. Mostly I just download shit, haven't done that recently either though.
I dunno if music is getting any worse than it has been. Radio (in Finland anyway) has been airing mostly crap for several years. All the same crap over and over again in every channel. Why can't they f#/¤(ng variate? Even good songs wear out in a week. It's like when you turn on the radio, you can pick some (s)hit song from your mind that they have been playing recently and the changes you are going to immediately hear it!
And now when I'm at it, why the hell on earth do they have to advertise THEMSELF between almost any song?!?! "You're listening to Shit Radio 94,7, we play all the hits you like (over and over again) and we are the best channel (as in like we would differ in any manner from others) blaaablaaaaablaaaaaaaa. Stay tuned! In 10 minutes you are going to hear this same advertisement again!! We are sure you can't wait!"
Anyway I think generally they play bit better music in night clubs than in radio, other than that, I dunno what percentage of all the music released are played in radio and in night clubs but I'm guessing it's very small so for all the other music I can't really say much about it.
Many bands I listen to share a common phenomenon though; First album kicks ass but the second is crappier and maybe even completely different style. Take Limp Bizkit for example, I'm sure you have heard the current material but I can tell you if you heard the first album you wouldn't believe it's the same band. That album has a terrible sound in general though. Deftones' style in their first album is completely different than their current, the latest album released recently is complete crap actually. I didn't even bother to copy it. Incubus' first album kicks ass but the second is mostly crap and the third is very crap! Same pattern goes on. Even Him's style in the first album is very different than the current.
Ofcourse this is not how it always goes, with some bands newer material just get better. Can't think of any though. Except Kingston Wall but that's quite bad example since it's not very known and the albums were released in 91-93 or some shit
I think the most common thing is that an album contains one or two good songs and rest is crap.
I think it's because if a single is made and it becomes a hit, something else shit is just compiled together to make a full album to rip some money. I think similiar effect is why second albums get worse, material of the first album is a result maybe from several years but the second album is just some new shit quickly forced out to get more money.
Also an album can contain just crap, or mixture of crap and good. Also it can be all good. Posts can be crap too. Like this one. So I'm done. |

Totally agree! Groove FM is just about the only radio channel in Finland I can still listen to more than 10 minutes. They're still able to play 30 mins without advertising themselves, and even then their ads are like 5 secs long max, whereas NRJ for instance could play a whole song in the same time their ad lasts. Groove is still able to go a whole day without repeating a tune, NRJ can cope for 2h and then the playlist repeats itself.
Overall, I've skipped the concept of radio all togheter. Only time I turn on the radio is in the car, and that's just because the CD player is dead... |

not to be off topic or anything, but I see where this is going and I have to say I agree with what you all say about radio. (I myself haven't bought a newly released cd in a long time, just to keep things on topic). I can't stand most of the stuff that is played on the radio. And the fact that songs are repeated so often (I once heard shaun Mullin's "lullabye" 28 timees in five days! GACK!) |

hmm.. i dunno about queensland, but here in victoria there are a couple of great non-bullshit-pop stations that SUPPORT unsigned artists called 3RRR (triple-R) and PBS FM. they have many shows throughout the week with an awesome variety of music, from jazz to underground hiphop, to breaks, drum N bass, all kinds of techno, rock, reggae, even country mandolin silliness!!... its all in there, and some of the DJs on those stations are those who play in the darker nightclubs, away from the bullshit pop music.. though all the other stations are a bunch of pop crap. hehe!
