Posted: Sun Sep 21 2003 00:10 fast cymbals problem |
 |
Hi, I am having some problems setting up my drum machine. Making myself some kind of extremely fast death metal, I need the cymbals (mostly crash and hi-hat) to be working at very high speeds. As a consequence, it's quite clear to hear that the cymbals play a mechanical and extremely "not real" annoying sound. I have been browsing through effects without finding a decent workaround for this problem, and also tutorials and FAQ's didn't help me that much about this. Anyone can give me some good advice? thank you. |

Hitting a cymbal in real life will be different every time. Both the attack as the volume will differ with every hit. Try playing with the offset command (09) to make changes in the initial sound of the cymbal, and vary with volumes for every cymbal hit (subtle changes, but they will be perceived). Furthermore, you could edit the cymbal into four versions with slightly different EQ settings. Load the cymbal into a wave editor such as soundforge, manipulate it very slighty with eq, and vary your sequence with these four samples, together with the changing sample offset and volume programming. Good luck!

Well, actually we have already made some, but it's not totally tracked stuff. i track only the drums, guitar and bass are real. vocals too. friend does guitar and bass (and some vox) and i do the rest. If you are interested in some of our stuff this is our url: http://listen.to/ritual-desaster . i would recommend the mp3's in the topten menu because some of the other stuff is quite... well let's just say that it was our first stuff and not exactly perfect :)
By the way we don't play exactly death metal, but crust, which is also defined as death punk, so you can figure it out. Any visits / publicity is welcome :) |

I kind of like them too, although it is too much punk for me. I enjoy melody over power (yes, I know, this will not be plausible whenever I explain why I love drum 'n bass & techno ), but there are some nice ideas in the songs.
Good luck expanding your skills with MadTracker, and feel free to ask whatever you want anytime. Updates on new song releases that were made in MadTracker are also gladly appreciated in the music section of this forum.

thanks to you too, by the way that suggestion of the offset command ruled majorly. setting different offset values to every hit of the crash, in addition to a couple of differently equalized samples solved all my problems with cymbals and tom/snare rolls too. But, still, I need to build one instrument for each sample otherwise the different notes will pitch my samples and this i dont want to happen.... Is there a workaround or an option to prevent this thingie ? |

For each sample you can define the original note. I.e. if you want a sample to be played at 1:1 speed when the D-4 key is pressed, set D-4 as the original note of this sample.
This can be changed in the sample properties. Click on the green waveform icon below the instrument list to see these properties.

@ Inge
That I`d call a useful tip. I`ll add this one to the tutorial . I found a way to make more real sounding piano tracks. It involves the use of a MIDI-Sequencer and MID2XM. Its a bit complicated but the results are good.
The idea is to record the played tracks on a sequencer e.g. Cakewalk. There the volume of the played keys is the idea. Since a natural piano player doesnt play each key at the same volume.
The next step would be to import the played MIDI notes into MID2XM and convert them.
This XM can then be loaded into MT2 and the only thing you have to do is to load a better instrument for the notes (like the Trinity Piano). I tried that with my Song Bossini, and it really sounds better. To get a softer sound for the Piano I use a cutoff filter so the accompaining melody is not that harsh.
Tell me if you have any ideas to make Pianos better.
Regards

hmm, I think what I'd like to see in a future version of MT is some sort of sample randomizer. For instance, you have a congo, and you have four different samples for the note c-4 of that congo. Then as you enter the congo in the pattern, MT would randomly select which of the four samples that is actually played in that spot. That way you'd get a more realistic sounding congo beat Could be a similar thing for pianos also, only there you might want to control what sample is played, since you probably want to control if the piano sounds as if it's played hard or soft. |
