Hi,
Just wondering, when you export to WAV does the quality of the file depend on your soundcard at all? Or is it always just the same algorithm or whatever producing the WAV file so it doesn't matter how bad your soundcard is you'll still get a decent file?
thanks

the way i understand it, the .wav is made independently of the sound card ... so it'll be the same no matter what you have. the sound card just determines what the .wav sounds like on your particular system.
it's still the same file |

thanks very much for the quick answer Excellent, well i guess in the end it just comes down to the quality of sampled instruments I used in the tracker |

Yeah, I got your other comment about VSTs in my other thread on here. I guess I'm a little scared to get into all that! Especially having been used to using nothing but samples all these years. I'm still using Madtracker 2.something, not moved onto Madtracker 3 (if there even is one!) but is it really as easy to use VSTs as it is to use samples? Do you still put all the note information into the usual patterns in the tracker? |

from what i've found out, it's exactly the same. click on the vst button rather than the sample button ... click the computer, and it'll give you a menu. click synth, and choose your vst. tha'll load the instrument. double click on the instrument in your vst window, and start playing around.
entering in the notes is the exact same. what i do, is use whatever sound comes up to write out the notes for the pattern i'm on, click on the "play pattern button" or just press the "alt" key next to the arrows, and listen to the pattern all the way through and let it repeat. while it's repeating, you can double click on your instrument, and the vst panel will pop up. here i can change the sound of the instrument with the vst settings to get exactly the sound i'm looking for. when i'm done playing in the vst panel, i like to go to the channel EQ settings, and fine tune what i'm playing.
lots of vst's have preset settings that you can go through, and are included with madtracker2. superwaveP8 is a fantastic vst, and you can find others that you can install, and installation is a snap. download the vst (usually as a zip file) and unzip the file into the madtracker vst folder. click on the config button (looks like a hammer in the top bar), click the plugins tab, and click "rescan VST plugins". it'll automatically load in the vst. i just recently found a great free piano vst (DSK AkoustiK Keys http://www.dskmusic.com/ click on downloads for the list) which i'm currently playing around with ... *cough* in 3/4 time ... ok i'm nutz, i know ... but the instrument is very nice.
madtracker really is a fantastic program. i wish it was still in development, but the latest one out (2.6.1) is as far as yannick is going with it. as soon as i get the money together, i definitely plan on getting the full registered version. exporting to .ogg files works for now ... but i'd really like to export into .wav for quality and consistency purposes.
lemme know if ya need any help. only been tracking for a year, but i'm getting better every day. you will too. EXPERIMENT! flip some switches, turn some knobs, play with it and have fun

Thanks man, that's really good of you to spend the time writing all that out very much appreciated. I've been using a tracker since the late 80s on the Commodore Amiga (Soundtracker, then Noisetracker, then Protracker) but i've only ever used samples
With your brief introduction above I think I will dip into VSTs in the very near future!
Thanks for the help again!

cheers for the link, I will check it out as soon as I am able (no sound at work!), for the record, a lot of stuff i have done using Madtracker is up here:

don't often give that link out but still, hey ho, everything on there is done with samples not VSTs (obviously not the Hawkwind mix as that's all by them! . No idea if any of it is your sort of thing but I will listen to your track shortly!

Nice one. Not quite my sort of style of music (so what tho! ), but there's some nice harmonies going on there! cool... will certainly be trying out some VSTs i think, i tend to steer away from preset sounds if i can though and like to mangle things quite a bit |
