Now, just tell me if I'm on wrong track (!*) here, but I spoke to a friend who's good at math, (which I'm really not), and he understood that whole thing about the BPM math problem. (Which I understand a bit of ofcourse..)

Is it true that:
This problem is a problem because of the frequency of the monitor (that is, how often the screen will update). This is something which is only for backward compability from FT2 and Screamtracker. If you have 60hz it will be like this:

122 BPM => (60/122) => 0.491803... seconds between every beat.

If it's 4 TPB it'll be 0.1229508... seconds between every tick.

You'll get 0.492 seconds between every beat => 121.951... BPM

Will this be the same if you use 50hz?

.. if I understood all correct, the BPM in Amiga trackers has always been correct, if they're runned on an PAL-amiga (that is 50hz..)

Is there maybe some way to tweak so mt2 will use 50hz instead? (By clicking some option of some kind...)

Well, just a thought and question Wink

/Daniel

btw, the calculation of BPM is not made by me, I just translated it Wink...

.... monitor refresh rate affecting BPM? Now that is funny.

p.s. are you competing with me for Most Sloppily Drunk MT User?

It think the refresh rate is coincidental, since 60 is (taadaa!) also the amount of seconds in a minute, and thus *always* the stable parameter for using an algorithm to calculate a bpm. Try the algorithm again with my refresh rate (90 hZ). Good luck; I don't think it will work.

[back of mind rumbling: how could a monitor *ever* influence your 'real' songspeed? Will my printer also interfere? And the coffee on my amplifier?]

Well that's a good point Inge. I wonder... Sometimes I've noticed that the proof of alcohol I'm drinking is directly proportionate to the speed of a song. For example, if I drink 40 proof liquor, the song seems to be 60/40 as fast as usual. If however I drink 140 proof liquor, the same song appears to be playing at 60/140 of the speed.

Hope this helps,
~Enon

No, the 60hz is still there only to be compatible with FT2 and Screamtracker. It does actually affect this.

I think we need Yannick to clear this up. I'm not saying that you might be right, mind you. I'm just saying that maybe you'll listen to him.

I could make a math lesson to explain that "inaccuracy" (which is a quantization), but I'm too tired right now. Tomorrow maybe? Wink

And yes the screen refresh rate had an influence on music speed in Amiga/Atari because that was used as the timer for the tracker's clock.

But the question at hand is whether or not monitor refresh rate has any bearing on the BPM in MadTracker, or FastTracker and ScreamTracker for that matter. No mathematical lecture or philosophical debate required, just 'yes' or 'no' will suffice.

goddamn,

Okay then. It was a question, not a statement. It was just a statement about old systems like Amiga and Atari, which I thought still had something to do with FT2 and Screamtracker.

HA! Well now you're singing a different tune, mr refresh rate! And you know why? Cuz your shit has been ruined! Damn I hate being right all the time.

cheers,
~Enon
