so you get the same results on the ide connector of your motherboard? Odd. It has to be a software issue in that case.

Did you already tried the diagnostic tool by Maxtor I referred too to check the integrity of your disk? And have you already done a complete windows XP update (service pack 1 and all latest hotfixes)?

Found this article in the ms knowledge base:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817472
Is it of any use?

~Enon

Converting should not have much effect on your rates if you install xp afterwards. I don't know the results if you do it when there's an installation already there (eventhough I don't even know if such a thing is possible).

Let me know how it works Smile

That Microsoft fix is for drives connected to the primary IDE ports on the motherboard. I did some registry snooping and found the entry for the ata133 card IDE channels, and modified them as per the instructions. No difference. My last resort before I give up and crawl into a corner and weep uncontrollably until the end of my miserable days is to try the PowerMax diagnostic boot floopy. Just downloaded the latest version and am ready to try it. If you don't hear from me, it means I'm following through with the above-mentioned plan.

cheers,
~Enon

p.s. goddamn.

is Windows XP just an all around pain in the ass? I'm still using Windows 2000 pro. After everything I've heard about winXP, I am convinced not to use it unless I feel like doing this Brick wall . Wish I could help you, Enon, but since I'm totally Windows XP ignorant right now, I cannot.

Jesse Moore does not endorse the use of Windows XP becuase it is Windows 2000 pro with a ton of useless shit added.

Well as fate would have it, PowerMax says I have a bad drive. It gave a 6 digit code, but the maxtor website has no references to what those error codes mean. I'll crawl into a corner and drink myself to a stupor now...

Most maxtor disks have a three year warranty. Just return the disk to the shop where you bought it, including the error code. They'll return it to maxtor, and they in advance will have to test and replace it (if it really is corrupt and if the warranty still is valid). You will atleast be missing it for a couple of weeks though.
