I used to have a Pentium 166 with Win98 and FastTracker. It had a very simple soundcard, as I can remember. I don't think most new soundcards will work properly in MSDOS-based programs.
Anyway, I started the computer while hitting the F8-key repeatedly during reboot, you'll get a nice menu then. From there, you can start in MSDOS-mode and then start FT2. You can do that rather than exitting to dos from Windows. On this computer, FT2 worked like a charm. Then the power supply blew up, and the new ME-computer would not run FT2 anymore, even when I made a bootdisk to start in MSDOS.
I think is has something to do with soundcard drivers, the soundcard could not be detected in DOS on that ME-computer.

So you can do two things:
1. Buy a slow computer (I had a 386DX 40MHZ computer on which FT2 worked, but Pentium 1 with Win95 is recommended) for a very low price, or
2. Forget about FastTracker and just use MT2, that's what I did since existance of fast computers. And as it rulez much more than FT2, I don't see why you and your friend have to use FT2.

Cheers,

Big Mo

Guess what...DOS needs mouse drivers to make the thing work.

The thing you are trying to do is somewhat impossible. As I've said before, you'll need a soundcard that comes with native DOS drivers (you know, the software that actually influences your autoexec.bat and config.sys Wink), and you'll need a DOS-environment in which you use all your peripherals.

In windows 98, you can select options once you decide to run a program in dos mode from windows 98. In the case of ft2, rightclick on the icon that starts the program, and check the options available. Since I don't have any 98 based computer, I can't suggest anything else than to play around with the settings. I just don't think that it will work though.
