I just had to post this topic here cause you locked those "the guru "'s topics. I hope this doesn't lead to somekind of teenage style my program is better than yours fight.
I believe it's a matter of your skills, not the programs you use. And when you are starting musican you might not afford some 700e sequenser program, and for a first timer you don't want to put that kind of money away when you are incertain does this even lead to anything.
And i hope that most people do music for fun, not to make a living out of it. I proably will be makin music all my life but i don't ever be able to quit my job because i have no ambitions for mainstream music.
I firs time tried with amiga(soundtracker) and actually really got intrested about music something like 1996 with ft2. Thank god there was no dance Ejays back then. Some part of the ft2 years i had some programs in windows what i used to make some effects to my samples so i had to close the ft2 go to windows, add some effects, close windows and go to ft2 again. (ft2 did crash my computer if i ran it under windows) I think if something, that did increase your patience. And now when i hopefully in a year or two will be spending about 3000e to upgrade my homestudio i will still maintain the patience what i have learned on the early days... the thing when you sit on you computer constantly 12 hours and make the track just the way you want it. And for me for going from ft2 to mt2 was a great improvement when i found this program, and proably will be using it with the new programs too.
I've heard so much amazing tunes made with trackers and i have also heard so crappy tracks made with professional tools... (even in radio everyday ) so it't all in your head afterall.
ok... i'd better go to work now so i don't preach to much |

I don't think I will be making music all my life. I do certainly know that I will be involved with music all my life. My two major things are music and written communication, and my interest to both enjoy as to produce them are significant driving forces in my life. I do wish to be able to combine these two in a professional way (such as music criticism or being involved in document-writing for music tools), but I don't want to pinpoint myself on pure arts as a profession.
I used to be eager to get my music published, but that was back in the days when my music was even worse It was *so* disappointing to hear these recordstore morons saying that it somewhat sucked I'm okay with what I'm doing now, making whatever I want to make and only for the fun of challenging myself, and looking back at successful projects.

I've answered option 4: "No i'd have to get another job to pay my music hobby".
My music making is for fun just as playing computergames is fun:
I have several interests and musicproduction is just one of them.
If by some circumstance I can make a living by making music I'd probably go for it, but it's not my goal in life.
Currently it looks like I'm almost done with my study of business computer science and will probably find work as either a software engineer or information analyst. But who knows? Life is strange.

Odd title for this topic btw |

Ok, I know I'm not great at what I do, but I know I can only get better... unless I get clobbed over the head with something and get amnesia, but that's not the point.
I think, if you want to get somewhere in life, you've gotta take any good opportunity that comes along, and try your hardest to make it work.
I know, unoriginal thought, a lot of people say that, but eh... |

You know, picking up an instrument is the best thing anyone can do to completely overhaul their music. It didn’t take me but a year of real practice to grasp the major gist in music theory on my own. Learning to play keyboard opened, like really opened some huge doors. And all the while Madtracker was right their, opening up the gates that will inspire all. Granted I’ll never get that symphony in my mind onto anything in the very way it should completely sound. But with simple tools, you can create just one path down a road of infinite choices. This is the core and con of music, its finding your inner chaos that is order. One of my quotes fits music great "keep it simple within your own eyes and the greatness will come as you".
