 |
If someone has a moment, I need some clarity regarding the drum machine. The problem I'm having is this: while I'm doodling around in the drum machine view I like to move things around and try out different position for the beats, etc. Occasionally I want to group together several beats to move as a block. I choose the box cursor to box the beats I want, move them, etc. Usually this works fine. However, sometimes when I want to move beats from one pattern to another (i.e. duplicate the rhythm to build breaks) I use cut and paste, and something weird happens. Something I'm doing is causing some or all of the beats to lock into position and replicate themselves to all the other patterns, even patterns I have not yet used. To further complicate things, these "locked" beats don't play when I hit the play button. Then from time to time my beats in the patterns I AM using don't play. It's all very strange and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I can see the usefulness of creating a silent template to build breaks over in new patterns, if this is indeed what is going on, but I can't seem to figure out how I'm tripping this function while doodling.
If this makes any sense, somebody clue me in or point me towards a URL with a reasonably detailed tutorial for the drum machine.
Thanks. |

The drums pattern editor is a bit tricky. When you select beats, they stay in a layer which is above the actual pattern beats - so they aren't played. And they will be merged with the pattern only if you deselect them (by selecting something else, or nothing).

@Myztique
Ouh, I am not quite sure If I have explained exactly that point. But if not I promise it will be in my next update I`ll add this point ASAP.
The drum patterns have some kind of weird behaviour you will be confronted with at the beginning:
If you select a portion of the drum-pattern you want to copy (using the rectangular selection tool, or by hitting CTRL-C) the selection mutes the selected samples which is indicated by a slight different colour (maybe change the colour settings to let it show better, maybe red colour instead of lighter green). If you then copy this portion paste it you wont hear anything (since the samples are still muted) until you choose the arrow-button from the menu and click somewhere else on the pattern to fix the pattern. Then you should be able to listen to it. Like Yannick said It acts like a kind of layer you have to put down to make it audible. Its those little things that make the whole thing tricky |

That explains it! Thanks a lot for the clarification, and yes I agree that changing to a different color would help discern between the two.
Thanks! |
