Export to ScreamTracker (s3m) Format? |

Hi,
 Noob here... I've been looking for a tracker (or other) that will export to s3m format for a project I might be working on. Would MadTracker fit the bill? Is there any way to export to s3m format?
I like what I see of it already (although I have no specific experience with Tracker software, so I'd be starting over) but the only reason for moving to this platform is the s3m file requirement.
Any suggestions? I'll buy the prog if s3m export is possible.

MT2 can read .s3m, but only saves/exports to native format (.mt2) and also Fasttracker2 .xm. You'd need a converter to get it to .s3m. Try browsing www.s3m.com . There's tons of converters out there. I hope this is correct info I just gave you.  |

Thanks for the info, Technoid (appreciate the quick response).
The only thing I've been able to find, so far, is another tracker that does the conversion (ModPlug).
I'm lost, though. Is MadTracker that much better that I should use it and then convert it in something like ModPlug, or am I simply better off to use Modplug only?
You wouldn't have any experience with both progs, would you?
Sorry to be a pain. Feel like such a noob. My experience has been with Midi/Audio (specifically Cakewalk's Pro Audio and Sonar) and with other programs like Fruity Loops. I've never tried using a Tracker before.
Any insight is much appreciated.

Well, I'm not the guru here on the "ModPlug vs Madtracker" issue. I've dabbled in both, but not enough to give you an accurate or concise response. The other guys here should be able to give you a better response. Now, both are indeed trackers. A tracker basically is an audio sample sequencer using hex codes. It's pretty similar to Fruity Loops and Acid, et al. On the other hand, Cakewalk is more or less the same, sans hex codes I believe. It also handles MIDI, since Cakewalk started off as a MIDI sequencer. I have CakeWalk Homestudio 3.01, BTW. It's still usable. It's from the age of Windows 3.01.
As far as Modplug vs Madtracker... Well, Modplug has VST and Soundfont support. The problem is that the program's last version is a couple years old. So, the author decided to quit and recently gave up the source code. It's now pretty much opensource and ready for next version development at SourceForge.net. As for MT, Yannick has v2.5 release candidates adding in VST. That should hopefully get MT into the virtual instrument age. Other than that, I see no other differences between MP and MT, except maybe bugs and adapting to the GUI and program interface. Stick around and read the other posts. That should help get you started with new knowledge. |

GHaavy, if you need to work with the old-school formats like S3M, MOD, etc. then you should use ModPlug Tracker. IMHO, it is the best Windows tracker to deal with these formats. MadTracker on the other hand is not fully backward compatible (only with XM) and has some new features like the automation, BPM syncing of samples, and soon ReWire.
So, in all honesty, MT2 will be a bottleneck for you if you have to produce S3M modules for your project.

Hi, Martin,
I've been asked if I would be able to develop music for a sound engine for the Palm Operating system, created by Astraware (handheld gaming company). Because of the obvious restrictions imposed by handhelds, they based their music engine upon the tracker format... in particular, ScreamTracker.
So I started researching the possibility of creating music in this new (for me) medium. I came upon this website through Google (to answer Yannick's question ) and from what I've read in this forum so far, this community looks like one I would love to join.
Yannick's honest response only confirms my affinity for this group, so I thank you for that, Yannick.
I've downloaded both ModP and MadT for testing purposes, but I'm totally lost. It's such an alien environment for me.
I suppose what I'm asking is, which prog would be the easiest as far as the transition from midi? I think I first have to determine whether or not I can get my head around the new format, first.
If MadTracker is easier to use, then I would gladly pay the registration cost to get up and running quickly... and worry about the format later.
Thanks for your help, by the way. I'm more than a little intimidated by the process since I opened the program to see all of these hex numbers racing up the screen

this link has been recommended to many noobs  But I guess you have to decide for yourself if it's better to start learning s3m right away, since Madtracker and screamtracker do differ some. My guess though is that Madtracker is easier to learn. As a bonus, if you start learning Madtracker, you get this forum where no questions are too dumb to get an answer |

My thinking exactly, Sunbuster. I think I'll hang around here and see what I can absorb. I always worry about asking stupid questions, so I thank you for that.
Thanks for the kind words of encouragement, Martin. I haven't committed myself to the project yet, but I'm very excited about learning a new process, so hopefully you guys won't mind if I continue to jump in with questions every once in a while.
My first rule of thumb, though, is RTFM... so I'll try to shield you from the really, really dumb questions

B.C. is absolutely gorgeous... as are the national parks located near the border between British Columbia and Alberta (Banff & Jasper). But thank you! I'm rather proud of this Province, myself.
