hah i wish it was that easy, this wasn't just a crash. Something bad happened...very bad.

First i smelled a burning smell in the air, thought my fan was overheating cause i'd had it on for a few days straight so i turned it off and smelled it...not my fan then i was started panicing cause i then turned to my computer and low and behold it all of a sudden shuts off. I then proceed to unplug my computer and quickly take off the side panel hoping that nothing will catch on fire, i throw and ice pack on the top of it hoping to cool it down, and it does cool it down. i leave it sit for about an hour and i thought i had traced the smell to my power supply. mainly because the power supply was really quite hot. so after that hour i then decided to plug it back in and see if the computer would turn on...it turned on then quickly shut off and after that it wouldn't even power up anymore.

I've had my computer looked at by a couple pros and they've narrowed it down to the hard drives. my 120 gig doesn't even spin anymore and my 30 spins but isn't recognized anymore. What is now the theory is that the 120 which had my OS on it had a serious failure and just shit itself and which might've courrupted my second hard drive as well. So as it stands my 120 had all my madtracker on it and my mp3's...my pappy said its possible to have my drive sent to someplace and have them take apart the drive and manually take of the data in a clean room. but thats expensive so if i was going to do that i think i'd only take my mt2 files...all i really care about really...but shit happens i guess ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR VALUABLES!!!!!!

Yeah, that's called a Data Recovery Service and they usually pay per a unit of bytes (gigs, megs, etc.) and can be very expensive. Find out how much you'll pay though. It could be affordable.

Sounds like the same problem I had last year when my power supply burnt. It damaged my mother board but the HD, CD-ROM and the PCI cards were ok.
Maybe you had less "luck" than me... Anyway, a data recovery should still be possible in a laboratory or something. If the mechanical part of a HD is dead, the magnetic plates are still there.

yeah actually i tried putting them into other computers, making them slaves masters all that jazz.

And get this...the data recovery service costs anywhere from 600 to 5000 dollars...lol ahh well goodbye music i'll know better next time. I'm glad i got a couple recordings of my good songs or i'd really be down in the dumps...but all my mt2s are down the drain Sad

I had the same sort of problem a few years ago, with a harddrive crash. Apparently, the harddrive had been scratched (an internal mechanical problem was to blame), and a large number of files refused to work.

I managed to save a few (crappy and now useless) files on Floppy though, before it went "bleh" on me.

It seems you've had much worst luck though

hahaha! @ technoid

regarding the crash though, those services sound really expensive!! i thought they were a little cheaper - surely there is some data recovrey place around your city with cheap services? i know exactly what you're going through though, and seriously, i would consider data recovery in this situation. but i guess thats because my music is the most important thing in my life..

good luck man Smile
