Hey Everyone, I recently did two remixes using Madtracker (off course) of two songs by this other guy named David Swain ( http://www.daveswain.com/index.htm ) who lives in New York (I live in Chicago). I came across his website after "googling" myself and we started emailing each other about 2 months ago. He is a pretty cool guy and has a musical style completely different from mine, as he is an acoustic playing singer-songwriter and I am, well, whatever I am hehehe. all I can say is awsome. David Swain you impress me (both of you? ), thier is still some mastering work that could be done, but over all its great. you brought alot of life into the song that I thought It lacked indefinetely in the first version, althou the remake is alittle short, or it seams like it, from the first version (maybe didnt use all the lyrics, thats ok). Its pretty hard to get a drum machine like madtracker to ceate realistic drums, not impossable but hard. Its the only place I found any thing I would have changed. maybe try a different snare, use one thats in the my remix of your song, or maybe turn it down alittle, and turn the high hats/ chrashes up just a hair and the reverse ones down a hair. but other then that, brovo guitar playing. Is he going to sing in some of your other songs (as remixes or something)? I hope so, that would be great to hear some of your songs with lyrics behind them.

Yeah, I agree with everything that you said. The drums do need a bit off work, but I'll probably just leave it as is, unless I get bored and want to correct some stuff. I am always searching for better sounding drums, but I still haven't found the sound that I am looking for.

The song is a bit short, but I had to shorten it to get rid of all the parts of the original song that I was not too happy with. He had lots of verses that were way to happy sounding to me (I prefer the darker sides of things). Also, all of the verses were different speeds, so I had to adjust them to get them to fit the drums...after a while I just got burned out..lol.

As far as I know, the other David Swain is not going to be singing on any of my songs. It would be nice if he could, but I don't think that he has a good computer or any home recording experience. However, if he ever aquired a computer and some recording experience, I would be more than happy for him so sing on some of my songs.

Oh, you mentioned the track needs some mastering work...what exactly did you have in mind (more so for future projects, but I am still interested in any suggestions). The whole mastering thing is still a bit overwhelming for me, but I am slowly learning, so any tips are greatly appreciated.

Hey David, just visit your site...some nice tracks you got there (and shirts ) Have you thougth of using sliced drumloops instead of using drumshots? So the drums would sound more realistic and fit better to the quitar. some sample sites: http://www.madtracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=50 Tom

Hey Tom,
I am not exactly sure what you mean by "sliced drumloops." Could you elaborate a little? I think I understand what you mean, but I want to be sure. I have used regular drum loops before, but it didnt sound very good Crying or Very sad

I will try ANYTHING to get the best sounding drums that I can find! So any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi David! I guess he means chopped up beats. This method is quite popular for creating breakbeats. The idea is to keep the character (sounds more lively) of the original loop instead of using one shot samples. But for that you need to play the drums yourself, sample those and cut the file into segments. This segments will then be arranged in the tracker. This is a different approach then creating the beats in the tracker using one shot samples.

Even better: 1: sample existing drum solos or drum patterns that are dry (so no additional instruments are playing) 2: proces it in your favourite wave editor (compress, enhance, maximize, filter, phase, whatever) 3: get propellerheards recycle 4: load the sampled drumploop inside recycle, and specify the individual shots 5: exports these drums 6: use them in your tracks. It works for drum 'n bass and breakbeat, so it definately should work for real music Inge

I've got quite some normal drumloops, because they are great material to make drum 'n bass beats out of them. It ranges quite a bit, but I would say the average is around 110 or 115 or so.

Ok, I've noticed such, not ignorance but something like it, whent it comes to programs used, in reality it doesnt matter. In music the only thing, and I mean the only thing that matters is, "is" the sound. Who cares about what you use or how its used just as long as it sounds good (what os, what synth, what? period. why stress over such things, yea if people ask good but most times the best way is always that they find out for themselfs otherwise thier being isnt into whatever it is thier going for.), and to be honest thats what makes music famous (spelling undoubtedly). but thats it, yea their might be programs that come with better samples to produce whatever, but still in madtracker its a sequencer. and if anyone has ever used a sequencer before its just playing a sample, a *.wav. do whatever you can cause untill you get it to sound like something on some popular radio station It obviously isnt all just "click click boom" so to speak. ok sorry Im pretty drunk right now, just got back from the american country music fest and just partied that out till the end, 2 am and im ready for bed. regardless I think what I said is true, if not I'll edit it in the morning. ok on a side note, I have writen over 100+ songs and all 100 I passed off as practice, just like any instrument. before you can really do what you want to do you must first undersand what "do" is for the instrument your using. david swain, you know what "do" is for guitar, I know you do, I have a room mate who's been playing guitar just as long as you have and I see that playing is the same no matter what person. even at the consert I was just at, a country keybordist, rocked, he knew what he was doind all the way and that is genious of the instrument, and that's when good music comes from whatever program you use. and swain you are on the right track, so is everyone else who just keeps writeing, that all that matters, just keep writeing and freedom beyond every child hood fantacy of what freedom is, becomes reality. And thats were I know all musicians want to be. and that is just be and the music will come. what? Ok phylosophy(oops but who cares) of music right thier, night all peace.
