Since Yannick adviced me to start using Firefox (Firebird it was still called back then  ), I've picked up a sweet addiction to open source software. I'm trying to replace all my normal software with open source versions, since they all offer the possibility to manually tweak the core with rather simple settings (such as the user.js file for Firefox), and one can directly interact with the programmers to get certains in or out. Furthermore, they are free, and almost always surrounded by nice communities.
The last nice program I found is Filezilla. It's an FTP client, and after some testing I found it to be better than Ws FTP pro. The interface is better, it feels faster than WS ftp, more settings can be adjusted (clicking results either in up/downloading or opening / file-association on your server can manually be adjusted), more browsing options (treeview, normal folder layout), and it feels nice to use open source software

i agree.. (don't look so surprised now, inge!  )
open source is SOOO much better, it's free and has tons more features that most other software doesn't. although i'm finding it hard to switch from windows to its open-source equivalent..

What do you mean mikx? Some opensource authors will make different O/S versions of their programs, i.e. if not native to your platform.

i mean afaik there aren't any operating systems like windows, that run windows programs, but are free, and have 100's more features than windows.. i guess my dream of a perfect world is just being completely clouded by bill gates and his cruel intentions .
as for my avatar, it's from another thread in which lollie posted a pretty cool flash animation featuring me being squished by a rock of some sort..

I see what you mean about the O/S. Well, there are other systems out there that are free, such as Linux, BeOS, FreeBSD, but yeah, you'd need emulators and wrappers to get M$ Windows GUI translation and that would usually makes things slower. Besides, do you think M$ will just sit there and watch people flock to this new Windows-clone? Anyway, there was something called Windows 98 Lite, but never tried it. |

Win2kpro does a fairly nice job at the client-side of the OS-story. I can live in this environment.
What I still would like are the following programs in open source format:
-office package for word, excel and powerpoint (anyone any experience with open office?) that writes to .doc, .xls and .ppt format (I really need these extensions to make documents that are compatible for classmates)
-an html program that is as intuitive as dreamweaver
-a real wave editor (haven't seen anything so far that convinced me to stop using the terribly efficient combination of soundforge (wave editing), wavelab (processing) and audition (multitrack productions).
-a photoshop-alike thingie.
Let me know if you got any leads on any of these

Open Office is a good alternative to MS products. Takes a while to get used to, has some weird quirks, but in general works just as good as MS office. Haven't worked with it that much myself, but my dad uses it a lot and he's pretty happy with it. |

Patm: pretty cool. Just installed it. I have to get used to the interface, but the options seem impressive. How stable is it? I don't want to loose hours of work due to instability issues.
Sunbuster: might look into it. I would prefer direct feedback from an enduser before stepping into that program (especially since it's such an extensive program).

I never used it for extensive documents.
The only use I had was for a few occasional letters to be sent.
With that ammount of use, I had no problems. |

Ctrl+s every 5 minutes still applies on any windows software, backups might be a good idea also |
