File rename on Amiga for transfer to PC?

Like the brilliant people you are, you probably already figured out what I'm about to ask for since you read the nice Subject line.

My "friend" Crown over at the "Amiga Music Preservation" site ( http://dascene.net/ ) has had my Amiga HDD for, well, almost a year now. I'm still waiting for the files. Lately, I'm begun to violently spam him for the contents of the HDD.

He claims that the Amiga filenames contain nonstandard characters in their name and cannot be transfered to PC without renaming them.

He seems a little too relaxed on this subject so I have reason to believe that unless I find a program for him to rename the files I will never see the Amiga mods that I composed in my youth (and nor will you!).

So. I need a file-renamer program for the Amiga, I guess, that I can give to him. I think it needs to have some sort of automationing of the process builtin. While manual renaming could be done in theory, I simply don't think he's going to do it. Not for just my mods, let alone the rest of the HDD's contents.

Who has this magical piece of software? Pointers, tips, urls, emails, phonecalls, I dont care... Give it to me!
I'll make a section on my homepage dedicated to all of my old mods too, if I get them, so that all can listen to them.

I'm counting on you guys, don't really know where to turn... Also, ofc, if you know of any Amiga user forums with active users with the experience needed, then I'd like to know about it...

Enuff ramble. Shoot.

The characters doesn't work on PC? Seems like bullshit to me. Ever since Windows 95, it has used the same character set as the Amiga, ISO ..

You should've sent the HD to me instead..

This is what he said:

> non windows letters : * ? etc. I am trying to find a way to transfer them
> without having to rename all files.

Yeah, I've never had problems with the files going between the Amiga and PC, but I can see how the * would cause a problem since it's a wildcard on the pc.

So if you were to mass-rename them, you'd need a renamer for the Amiga-side that would take any filename with the * in it and change the * to something else.

Hmm! Ah .. * and ? does not work in Windows. ? does not really work good on Amiga either if you're going to be able to handle it well.. (for example, you can't delete/rename a file in CLI/SHELL if it has a ? in it's file name)

But how hard can it be to rename them with a file browser on the Amiga? How many mods is it?!?

Naeh, the Amiga can handle 31 or 32 characters I think, and Windows can handle 256..

But back in the good ol' days the PC could just handle 8+3 characters Wink

Like DUH!!!!!

I had no problems whatsoever sending files from amiga to pc with Amiga explorer (http://www.amigaforever.com/ae/) ..

Anyways, IF it should be a problem, one could imagine to use RAR or another packer to pack the shit together Smile before sending to pc Confused

Makes one wonder Smile

Yeah but when you're going to unpack them they may not work? Or... Am I missing something here?

I'll think it will work :

Quote:
when you copy your files from PC to the Amiga, or vice versa, longer filenames will be truncated to 8.3 by adding ~1, ~2 etc to the first six characters of your original filename and preserving the suffix. The last number differentiates between names that have the identical first six characters. You can avoid this by archiving the files, with their long names, with Winzip, LhA or some other suitable programme before transferring. When you unarchive the files the long names will have been preserved

Aye. Before your answer, I've emailed the LHA suggestion to Crown. He's very very slow on answering and the replies are short and cryptic so I can just cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Maybee it's a good idea to get your harddisk back from him, i'm sure there are enough ppl on this forum who can help you out on this one , i even have an amiga (2000), for now it's lying on the attiq, but i'm sure we could work something out as well Smile, would be cool to figure it out and see my old amiga working again Wink

Btw is it on a hardcard ?

Ya... I'd do that. The two problems are that I already paid like £35 to get the drive to him and I'd have to fork up another £35 to him and have him send it back, and that last part is going to be hard as hell.

Hardcard... Do you mean like "you stick it in the port to the left"? No. It's cable.

Hmm the send back could be a problem, just wait to see what happens from here then Confused

Hardcard, like a controller and harddisk on one card to stick in a zorro bus, but i don't know if it was on an a2000 Very Happy , but it sounds like it is an external one, so that wouldn't be a problem at all Wink

Yup external. The only thing needed is a cable and you're good to go.
