Posted: Sat Apr 29 2006 23:47 How to find Flat Response with DJ Headphones? |
 |
Silly me, I recently purchased a pair of huge-bass DJ headphones (Technics RP-DH1200) and, lo and behold, they're extremely hard to compose with. Does anyone know of any way that I can EQ them to gain a flat response, and thus FINALLY be able to make some good music? |

I would recomend you to buy a new pair of headphones then, and try them out in the store before you buy them. It really isn't a good idea to try and eq it. |

Agree with Toffe, try to find a pair of studio headphones with a flat response from the get go (not DJ) and sell the DJ headphones (or save them for comparisons). AKG and Sennheiser are manufacturers that are often used in studios. Beyerdynamics are also referred to sometimes. |

I don't have experience with it, but you could try some exchange site (doesn't ebay provide such a feature?) to swap your dj-gear for studio headphones.
It's really important to listen to future headphones in advance. Go to a shop, bring some top productions from the genre that you are active in, and listen for some time to a number of headphones. |

I have a Sennheiser HD280: http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/icm_eng.nsf/root/04974
8-25KHz linear. Not so bad, eh? Earpieces rotating 90 degrees around vertical axis and 180 degrees around horizontal axis plus 135 degrees around another horizontal axis - this means that if You put it on then automatically slicks _perfectly_ onto Your head and attentulates environment (however my computer is not in my room but if You live together with Your PC, this headphone will attentulate it's noise by 32dB - that's cool...). Other effect of perfect match is: pressure spread around You ears and almost can't feel that You wear or not wear headphone.
When I did tried first time in the shop, many large sub-bass speakers was front of me. I did asked salesman to turn on my reference CD for me to can test headphones but at the first sounds I took off headphones because stupid salesman did not turned off that large speakers.
BUT: I'm was wrong, he muted them... Sounds did not come from bass speakers but from the headphones...(!) Not bad :)
It have really wide dynamic range and a sound pressure level which is conflicts laws of certain countries(!)
It's cord is really strong (I'm sure will never need to replace), but there are two weak points where could broke. Fortunatelly You easily can bandage that points with strong band and is just will be perfect :)
Manufactured with consumer or pro. impedance and there is a version equipped with microphone (!) I really like to exchange my microphone-less version :)
And it is priced perfectly IHMO - little cheaper models will be much worser and any more pricely ones can't show _objective_ values for the extra money.
I using directly from soundcard's plain line out at 78% volume - it's loud, no amplifier absolutely unneccesary.
So, I'm really happy with it - my next headphone will be the same but with microphone. |
