 |
Hey all. I'm in the middle of a school project concerning madtracker and I need to find out how the madtracker program was to all of you when you started out. So if you could please tell me this:
How intuitive is Madtracker 2 in your opinion?
thanks

Haha. These answers will be largely dependent of other factors. If you really need to find out people's opinion about this, you atleast need to know some other things:
1: did you have experience with any other music composition tools before you started using MadTracker.
2: (if 1 is yes) were any of these programs based on the tracker concept (Fasttracker, screamtracker, impulse tracker, et cetera)
3: what age were you when you started using MadTracker?
Furthermore, I would divide the vague term 'intuitive' in sub-questions, such as
a: The lay-out of MadTracker made clear what each region was meant for (1: disagree, 7: agree)
2: I was easily able to find the tools that I needed (1: disagree, 7: agree)
3: I found the program overwhelming at first (1: disagree, 7: agree)
4: It took me a long time before I got the idea that I understood the program (1: disagree, 7: agree).
5: The visual elements correspond to the function that they have (1: disagree, 7: agree)
If you really want to measure the level of intuitiveness of MadTracker for new users, then drop me an e-mail (in Dutch) at inge at madtracker dot org. I'm more than willing to help with this.
My assumption could also be largely over-scientific. Maybe you just want to have a rough idea. In that case: I found it intuitive, but that was because I used Fasttracker and screamtracker for ages before I picked up MadTracker. I did however have problems with understanding the drum sequencer and the automation. The mixer was very easy to figure out. |

I also found the interface to be intuitive, but I had previous experience with other trackers (noisetracker,st3,IT) |

I found MadTracker while I whas looking for a replacement for Fasttracker II, since for some reason I couldn't load FT2 anymore after moving over to win95. So yes, MT2's interface was intuitive to me, because it was similar to FT2 in many regards and because I'd used other trackers for several years before that. It took me a while before I actually started to use the benefits of the MT2 format though (automation, drum patterns, track fx etc.), but I'm not sure anymore if that was because I was so hooked up on the FT2 way of doing things (coding everything into the pattern) or if I found the interface for the new things complicated.
If you really want to know how intuitive the MT2 interface is I'd suggest a study where one part of the study group are people who have worked with computer music but not with trackers, and one part are people who have worked with trackers but not with MT2. Ask them to make a small piece of music, then ask them the question of how intuitive they found the interface. |

Yea.. was on Fasttracker, Impulse Tracker, and Buzz;
before getting on Madtracker..
Being experienced with FT2 I found MT2 extreamly intuitive.
It actually solved many limitations I was beginning to run
into using FT2 (multiple fx on channel, filters, etc..).
Frankly though without having lots of samples and especially
PATTERNS built in (similar to a groovebox) this software will take lots of time to do much of anything. |

My story is quite the same as Sunbuster's. I used FT2 before MadTracker. I don't remember why I began looking for a new tracker anyways, or where and how did I stumble upon MT2. I remember I could run FT2 on my Win95-maschine. Or maybe I could not. Anyways, I found MadTracker and for a long time I used only the FT2-mode, and little by little started trying out advantages of MT2-format. I'm still trying out the advantages. So in my case I guess it was an advantage that MT has that FT2-mode too. And well, it's already 4-5 years since I found MT, so I have no clue whatsoever how intuitive it was at that time. I guess intuitive enough, since I started using it.
But I, too, would like a bit more spesific question here... |

My story is similar to Sunbusters. I started with several tracker types on the A500 (Soundtracker, Startrekker, Voicetracker). The last and IMHO best one I used was Protracker on the A500 in 1995 which was pretty hard to get since it was very sought after in the scene those days. When I got a PC I tried to find an adequate tracker which brought me to FT2. I also tried Screamtracker but couldnt get any good results with it and I didn't like its interface. What a breeze the first time I discovered Madtracker. A guy from my university told me about it. That was around 1997.
To be honest, Madtracker has really high potential and high quality but if you never worked with a tracker before it might feel a bit strange to get used to the interface. Thats why I decided to write the tutorial. The big pro of tracker software is that you can instantly create a song or rythm on the flow. You can change the instruments and samples with just a few clicks.
