Hi there!
I just out of accident started to make a dancetrack. Think Eric Prydz or something. And then I thought: "Damn, it would be nice if people could really dance to this!" So now I have a few questions. Are there any special things I need to think of when doing a dance track? Say I want the people at a club to dance there asses off! What do I need more than a pumping straight rythm? Any special production/mixing issues? Anything you could think of that would make a track non-stand-stillable! |

thats a good question. bass is definately very important.
also, a really strong snare and a hihat that cuts through the mix also work. also, filtering out the bass in the last bar of an 8 or 16 bar sequence, then dropping it back in seems to work (these are all things that get me dancing anyway). getting a really clear rhythm is most importantl |

Just listen to some dance tracks that would make YOU dance. And then simply copy them into your own style. That always worked best for me |

Don't make it too fast, don't make it too slow. Too fast and people can't keep up for extended periods, too slow and people think it's a lounge track and head for the bar instead. Around 135 I think is a pretty good target bpm.
Make the track predictable but not predictable In other words, the track shouldn't become boring because one can predict every move it makes minutes before it happens. However, the hardcore dancer should not end up feeling stupid because he/she starts jumping around like crazy when he/she thinks a break is over, when in fact the break continues for another 16 beats or so. Get it?
After that, I think it depends on what style you're going for. More "commercial" clubs, then it's more important the track has a good hook (something people can recognize the minute it starts playing), think
Storm - Time to Burn
Jakatta - American Dream
For the more underground (if there is such a thing anymore) I'd say atmoshpere and real tranceability (the ability of the track to get a dancer to forget the hot guy/girl in front of them and just dance) is more important. Good examples imo are
Delerium Ft. Leigh Nash - Innocente [Deep Dish Gladiator Remix]
The Greek Feat. Stephanie Vezina - Alive
Aquaculture - Don't play the game
Holden & Thompson - Nothing (93 Returning Remix)
Scooter - Rhapsody in E
Then there is this truly awesome remix of Miss Jane - It's a fine day, but I have yet to figure out who made it. If you feel like hunting then you can find it in the third part of Nick Warren's live set from Screen, Helsinki at around 10 minutes into the part. (btw. if anyone knows who made that remix, tell me!)
My thoughts, don't interpret them as the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth |

Thanks for all the advices!
I've managed to almost complete a song now, need an ending and make the final mix. Then fix the vocals as they suck quality wise now..
I'll post it here when it's done so you can throw poop and/or roses on it Haha. I feel "dancable" is a quite individual definition and that you need to mix diffrent stuff to please 'em all! ;D So your input is greatly appriciated! |

QBical: Yes! The holden mix it is, just found it *cough*. But interestingy enough I found two versions, one credits the original to Kirsty Hawkshaw the other to Opus III, none of the to Miss Jane (from whom I have a Fine day remixes EP). Any idea which is the correct?
bigandymac: Nope, not the same set. The one I have is from new years eve 2002. |

It's the kristy track. Isn't it so that she did the original, and miss jane was just a side project from ATB way back or something? I don't know...
but the holden mix rocks my socks though, also if you like that style you should check out some other tracks by the man. Come to me and Nothing are two great progessive techno tracks. And the more recent stuff is especialy great, remixes of britney spears ( breath on me ) and depeche mode among others. And ofcourse the border community label he started.
But for more information on how to make a proper dance track you can check out these video tutorials. |

Yep, Holden has been on my radar for some time The who's who of the electronic music scene is so damn confusing, but perhaps this link sheds some light on the issue of It's a fine day:
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Miss+Jane
and according to that, Opus III would infact be the real deal (if you don't count the a capella they talk about), since Kirsty is a part of Opus III... Damn my head's spinning |
