How to make a perfect loop?

Recently I used chainer (a program suggested in the forum) to make some .wav files from a vsti, so that i could use these samples in MadTracker 2. It was a string-like instrument, so i needed to make it loop in order to have enough duration Wink
That's were my problem is! Crying or Very sad

I couldn't make it sound right.
I just couldn't avoid annoying clips and make it sound continuous.

I want to ask if there's a way to know where to put the loop sliders, if there's a program that does the trick or a method to achieve a perfect loop. Please! Sad

The other option is to make loooong samples (20 sec or so), but in this case we need gigabytes of hd space for a couple of instruments.... and terrabytes just for a song!

Make a long-ish sample (10 or 15 seconds), then set the loop points where you think it'll loop without problems. Then zoom in, finetune the points, and remove the excess.

Some samples though, you'll have to set to Ping-Pong mode for the loop to work. Experiment.

Forward: Fine-tune the points to where the sound reaches that middle line, making sure that the points are set where the sound flow is consistant.
ASCii Example:
(sine wave) -°``°-.,,.- <<< good, complete loop
(sine wave) -°``°-., <<< bad, doesn't meet center

Ping-Pong: Have the points at the slowest top-most peak of the sound flow. This way the sound should bounce back and forth without any/many errors.
ASCii Example:
(sine wave) `°-.,,.-°` <<< good, meets "bounce flow"
(sine wave) `°-.,,.-° <<< bad, tick sounds will occur

...holy crap, ASCii looks crappy when it's not in Courier New.

...uh, how many samples per octave are you using in this instrument?
If you're using all twelve notes, then you're crazy. Just go with five or something. And go for a 4 or 5-octave range. Say, from C-2 to C-6.

If you're already doing that, then that must be one hell of a sample. It'd have to be, what, 256-bit or 192000kHz or something, and that doesn't even exist!

...Yet!

Now, this is a digital art Wink. I think there are some programs that automaticly can find out where the perfect loop points are, but I've never succeeded with those any good.

I've had the same problem in the past. The problem is that not every sample can be looped. Fact.

The most important thing for looping is the part Chicago explained. Use the crosspoint with the x-as for continuous loops, and the top of a waveform for pingpong looping. It's essential that the waveform itself is not interrupted, but that it can continue at the looping point without having to migrate from one place to the other.

Dont forget that you need a dry string sample. So no effect was applied before. You can try to crossfade the sample too (mixing with reversed sample).

No, since it was a long time ago I found that program. Though I will be back if I find it..
I've also heard that there are commercial, very expensive, programs for this aswell.

Fasttracker 2 had some kind of looppointfinder, although I canīt really remember how it worked.
Renoise also has a little tool which puts the begin and end of the loop next to eachother.

These tools are just al little help. The result depends one where you put the looppoint and which sample you are trying to loop.

Making a good loop usually means a lot of tweaking.

Can someone who has tried these give some comments about which tool works best?

Of course I'm interested in such a tool, but currently not much time yet to try them out.
