Newbie: Note duration & slur

Greetings,

I'm just a tinkler of Madtracker and trying to get used to it, but I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to hold a note longer. (I finally figured out stopping a note.)

Also, is it possible to slur notes or staccato notes?

Thanks,

Jeanne

if you want to hold a note longer than the actual sample length, either learn how to loop your sample (create an instrument) or try using a vsti instrument.

Holding a note depends:

Are you using a sample or a VST for your instrument?

a) using a sample it depends on how long the sample is and whether the sample contains loops or not. When you enter a note in the pattern editor of Madtracker that note will play for as long as the sample is, unless you stop it using Key off (Caps Lock). If the sample contains a loop then it will play untill you use a key off command on it.

b) if using a VST instrument then the duration of a note depends on the settings of the VST instrument and on when you use a key off command.

about slurring notes, I'm not actually sure there is a way to do this properly. One way to simulate this to some extent (I think) is to use the Glissando effect on a note and sample. Using VST instruments it might be possible to get a better result, but that probably depends on the VST used. I know there are some VST's where you can set up how the instrument should act in transition from one note to another. Unfortunately I don't remember any of them off the top of my head.

Staccato could be done in a number of ways, the one that comes to mind right away is to use the volume column in the pattern to quickly fade out instruments in between notes. Another is to have a dedicated instrument with a quick fadeout envelope. Again, the same can be done using VST's.

Since it's a bit hard to explain these things in words, I made a small sample demonstrating holding a note, slurring (kind of) and staccato: click here

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestions Martin and Sunbuster. That little sample helped tremendously! It taught me several things. I haven't even touched VST yet. Don't know if I will.

Brings up one more question. Is there a way to play just one line or even one line at a time? I'd like to hear if the chord that I wrote sounds right without listening to the whole pattern.

Thanks again!

Jeanne

If you hold the left shift key, press right ctrl, then the patterns starts playing from your current position. Pressing right ctrl again will stop the pattern. By doing so quickly, you can listen to one location on the pattern. It's not a clean solution, but it works for chords without having to listen to the entire pattern again.

Good, glad it helped Smile About VST's, I seriously suggest you start learning how to use them once your somewhat comfortable with the MadTracker enviroment, because they're a tremendous resource.

I got a same kind of question...

I got kinda used to madtracker by now but i can't seem to figure out the effects... i don't see the logic in the CF 234cf24 and that kinda stuff always standing there when i see a song from someone else. I do know that 100 is sliding notes up, 200 sliding down. ^1 to get it louder etc, and a little more, but then my knowlege stops....

Could someone show a tutorial or show me the logic... cause i don't see it Shocked

Exceedingly cool, Inge. Thanks.

Now I hope I don't embarrass myself too much with this but, is there some kind of glossary so that the lay person can figure out what "Flange" and "mpReverb" are or is best to just try them and learn that way?

Here`s a pretty good glossary:

but, just learn by doing - its more fun.
